The Shoot

The shoot location was decided as a village in the Anand district, away from Mumbai to avoid the rains. Not surprisingly though, the rains followed us there. Some said if it drizzles like this, the camera won’t catch it so we might be able to shoot. It was for a safe abortion campaign. First, many do not know that it is legal in India. Second, many do not know of the safety checklist around it. (For that matter neither did I till I began working on this. In fact, the first full day that I spent on this issue was just draining for many reasons). The shoot went off well. I learnt some stuff on-location.

The shoot was not without its little moments for me. First, the photograph that I have attached is where a sequence was shot. I just marvelled at the way they spelled the words, painted the boards in few brisk strokes and then ‘dirtied’ it up to make it look like the board has been hanging there for years! The other moment of marvel was Nazneen- a fairly fabulous professional from JWT. For colleagues she was Naaz. There was something about the name. I loved it. I never realized the beauty that her name ‘Nazneen’ shrouded. Like ‘Naaz’ had ada and attitude - both.

The campaign however has got into a jam with the government. So whether it goes on-air or not still remains to be seen. Honestly, it would be such a pity if it doesn’t. As this was supposed to be a first for India.
