Every once in a while, you come across something that plucks you from your everyday and reminds you of the bigger world that you belong in. It reminds you that beyond your story, there is a larger story that that you are a part of.
Supported by the United Nations Development Programme and 350.org the Pathway to Paris concert brought together renowned artists from around the world to remind us that this Earth is our home and the sky, our roof. Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers Patti Smith, Joan Baez, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, as well as rapper Talib Kweli, songstress extraordinaire Cat Power, Canadian throat singer Tanya Tagaq and Tibetan artist Tenzin Choegyal took over New York City’s Carnegie Hall for the night.
Powerhouse performers introduced speakers and passionate speakers introduced the singers. The evening witnessed one standing ovation after another. From sultry notes that set the stage to the voices of the Himalayan elders – no note went untouched; no cry went unheard. This was a house of people that knew that their home was calling out to them.
The evening saw different nationalities strike different notes. But each performance found a way to say:
Our debt to you remains countless, my beloved Earth.
Our debt to you remains countless.
